The staff of GGTrust has, by consensus, decided on a name for the new GGCurrency:
The GEO!
We went through a lot of different suggestions, weighing several qualities we wanted the name to carry: a connection to the Earth; a multicultural feel; a Yin, feminine quality; and associations with wealth, money, and prosperity.
Why GEO?
GEO does not have a specifically feminine connotation, but it does refer to the Earth — which carries many feminine names of its own: Terra, Pachamama, Gaia, Sophia, Ceres, Demeter, and more. We might have liked Terra best, but Bernard Lietaer already holds that name for his proposed currency, and we will probably use his Terra in our system anyway. So Terra and GEO are both Earth names, and they go together well.
We now get to go through this website and change most of the “GGCurrency” references to GEO. We expect the international currency designation (like USD for the US Dollar, or EUR for the Euro) will be GGG.
So — welcome the GEO!
The Other Names We Considered
Earth names
- Terra — a great name, but Bernard Lietaer already has a currency by that name, and it would get confusing. Variations considered: Terra Money, Terra Bux, and TerraBills (catchy, but too close to sounding terrible — and it probably doesn’t translate well).
- Gaia / Gaias — the Greek goddess of the Earth.
- Pachamama / Pachamamas — the Inka Earth Goddess. (“Pachamama Pesetas” has a nice ring to it.)
- Sophia / Sophias / Sophies — the Gnostic creator of the Earth and Earth Spirit.
- Earth Bucks, Earthcoin, Earth Dollars
- Geo — the winner: Geo Currency, Geo Money, Geo Dollars, or simply the GEO.
Divine Feminine names
- Cowries — a symbol of the feminine, and one of the most ancient forms of money.
- Magdalenas — signifying the wise woman, female wisdom and power, and the balancing of male power. Pro: a positive symbol for Gnostics and New Agers, strongly symbolic of the Divine Feminine. Con: hard to say, and many Catholics think of the prostitute.
- Hathor — the Egyptian cow goddess and Earth Mother symbol, pictured with many horns — and horns represented wealth.
- Isis — the Egyptian symbol of the Divine Feminine, but probably too politically charged today.
GG-branded names
- GGCurrency, GGMoney, GGBux, GGCoin, GG’s
- GGGaias — or simply GGG.
- Smart Money — or another name related to “Genius.”
Other ideas
- Rainbows — Rainbow Bills, Rainbow Money; a multicultural symbol.
- Dinars
- Tesla Currency — a name denoting “cutting edge.”
